If You're Here, You Already Know

You’ve done everything you were supposed to do.

The degrees. The promotions. The experience. The career that made sense on paper.

But something has changed.

Maybe you’re burned out.

Maybe you’re bored.

Maybe you were laid off and suddenly have the space to question whether you even want to go back to the same kind of work.

Maybe your priorities have changed, but your career hasn’t.

Or maybe nothing is obviously wrong — and that’s what makes this so difficult.

The hardest career transitions often happen when you’re successful enough that leaving feels irresponsible, but unhappy enough that staying feels increasingly expensive.

You don’t necessarily need to make a dramatic move.

You need to understand what’s changed, what still matters, and what deserves to come next.

Why Most Career Advice Doesn't Work at This Stage

The career advice industry is built for people trying to start careers, not people trying to rebuild them.

Polish your resume. Update your LinkedIn. Network more. Apply to more jobs.

That can be useful advice. But at mid-career, it often misses the real problem.

The question usually isn’t, “How do I get another job?”

It’s something deeper:

What do I actually want now?
What parts of my experience do I want to carry forward?
And how do I make a meaningful change without blowing up everything I’ve built?

The stakes are different at this stage. You may have a mortgage, a family depending on your income, and a reputation you’ve spent years earning. You can’t just pick something and hope it works.

That’s why career transition coaching has to go deeper than resumes, LinkedIn, and applications.

You need clarity before strategy.

You need to understand who you are now, explore what might actually fit, and gather enough real-world evidence to make your next move with confidence.

Your Path Forward

Discover who you are.

Explore where you’ll flourish.

Build what comes next.

My coaching process moves from self-understanding, to real-world exploration, to intentional action.

Discover

Understand who you are before deciding what to do.

Most people try to decide what to do before they understand who they are. Together, we'll uncover your strengths, values, personality, motivations, interests, and ideal work environments using evidence-based assessments and thoughtful coaching conversations.

→ By the end of Discover, you'll stop asking, "What should I do?" and start asking, "Which path fits who I am?"

Explore

Explore what fits before making a life-changing decision.

The best career decisions aren't made in your head—they're tested in the real world.

Together, we'll test promising paths through research, conversations with professionals, informational interviews, and low-risk experiments—so you can move forward with evidence instead of assumptions.

→ You'll replace uncertainty with evidence and confidence built through experience—not guesswork.

Build

Turn clarity into meaningful action.

Clarity only changes your life when you act on it.

Together, we'll translate insight into action by building a strategy that fits your goals, your strengths, and your life. Then we'll execute it together, one intentional step at a time.

When obstacles inevitably arise—and they will—you won't navigate them alone. I'll help you adjust, stay accountable, and keep moving forward until your new direction becomes your new reality.

You'll leave with more than a plan. You'll have the confidence to build a career and life that's aligned with who you are.

The Real Cost of Staying Stuck

Most people worry about the risk of making the wrong career move.
Far fewer consider the cost of staying in the wrong place.

Time

A year spent moving in the wrong direction is still a year.

Confidence

Spend too long in work that doesn’t use the best of you, and it becomes surprisingly easy to forget what the best of you even looks like.

Opportunity

Every year you wait is another year you aren’t building the skills, relationships, credibility, and momentum toward something that fits better.

The answer isn’t to quit tomorrow or make a reckless career change.

It’s to stop drifting and start gathering evidence about what should come next.

I’ve Seen Career Decisions From Both Sides of the Table

I’m Jeff Rothenberg, founder of A Path That Calls.

For nearly two decades, I’ve worked in recruiting, hiring, leadership, and organizational growth with companies including Apple, Target, LendingClub, and Upgrade. Along the way, I’ve hired more than 1,000 professionals and seen firsthand what makes someone stand out — and what causes strong candidates to get overlooked.

I’ve also been on the other side of career disruption — fired, laid off, and forced to rebuild my professional identity more than once.

That combination shapes how I coach. I understand career decisions from the employer side of the table — and what it feels like when the person making the decision is you.

My coaching is informed by professional coach training and assessments including MBTI, CliftonStrengths, Strong Interest Inventory, and VIA Character Strengths.

  • Rebuilding after two layoffs in two years

“After two layoffs in two years and a seven-month job search that left me questioning my professional worth, I was in a pretty dark place when I hired Jeff. He completely rebuilt my approach from the ground up – helping me identify personality strengths I'd overlooked, target new industries, and master networking strategies that actually work.

In just four and a half months together, I went from zero prospects to fielding two different offers. The networking techniques Jeff taught me directly led to my current role, and his interview prep helped me reframe my layoffs as a resilience opportunity rather than feeling like a failure. I ultimately secured a position selling a physical product I love with a $22,400 annual increase – way more than I expected.

Look, I was skeptical about hiring a career coach, but Jeff helped me land the right opportunity and salary, all while rebuilding my confidence that's going to help me succeed in the long run.”

    — TOMMY H., REGIONAL SALES MANAGER

  • A $20K raise in 4.5 months

"Jeff helped me pivot from a dead-end job to a $20K raise and a role I'm excited about every Monday. The change happened in just 4½ months—his strategic coaching gave me the confidence to position myself as irreplaceable."

    —SARAH M., TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR

  • From VP burnout to 19% raise and a role that fits

“I was stuck in a career that looked great on paper but left me feeling like crap on the inside. Jeff didn't just help me figure out what I wanted—he helped me create a strategic plan to get there. Within six months, I transitioned into a role that actually uses my strengths and pays me 19% more. In my time working with Jeff it was clear to me just how deeply he cared about me but also pushed me in a compassionate way to see my blockers in front of me head on and that made all the difference. I cannot thank Jeff enough for this new start for myself and my family.”

    — JOHN H., VICE PRESIDENT OF CLINICAL OPERATIONS

  • Pivoting after 17 years in the same industry

“I came to Jeff feeling bored and completely stuck after 17 years in the same industry. I knew I wanted something different but had no idea what that could look like. Jeff has this amazing ability to ask the right questions that help you discover things about yourself you didn't even realize. He helped me identify transferable skills I was undervaluing and opened my eyes to career paths I never considered. Six months later, I'm in a role that actually excites me to get up each morning. Jeff doesn't just help you find a job—he helps you find your direction.”

    — JESSICA B., HUMAN RESOURCES BUSINESS PARTNER

  • Cutting a year off a career transition timeline

“I'm typically very self-motivated, but I was spinning my wheels on a career transition. Jeff provided the external perspective and accountability I didn't realize I needed. His professionalism and genuine kindness made every session feel productive yet super comfortable. Our regular check-ins kept me focused and moving forward, and his insights helped me avoid costly mistakes. He has a gift for helping you see blind spots and opportunities you miss when you're too close to your own situation. One of the most eye-opening experiences was going through the Strong career assessment with Jeff—it revealed several career paths I had never even considered that were perfect matches for my interests and strengths. Working with Jeff accelerated my timeline by 6-12 months.”

    — JENNIFER H., PROJECT MANAGER
